Is Gum Reshaping a Necessary Part of Gum Disease Treatment

Posted on 9/10/2018 by Janie Scholes
Is Gum Reshaping a Necessary Part of Gum Disease TreatmentGum disease can cause a lot of damage. The amount of damage depends on the individual and how long they wait until they start to treat the gum disease.

The earlier you treat the gum disease, the less damage it can do and the easier it is to treat it and restore your oral health. Some people may end up with damage that affects the way they look. In those cases, they will turn to a treatment option that will help restore their appearance. That procedure is gum reshaping.

How it Works?
Gum disease can cause the gums to recede. That creates gaps between the teeth and the gums. The pockets become a place where bacteria can grow, and the problems can get worse. The receding gums cause the gaps and longer looking teeth that are not always desirable. Gum shaping is a way to restore the appearance of the teeth impacted by gum recession.

The gum reshaping works to remove the bacteria found in the pockets created by gum disease. It then works to seal the pockets and the gaps to prevent more bacteria from reentering the teeth and gums. Gum reshaping can also help people who have a gummy smile. This is a smile where the teeth appear smaller than they should.

Who Needs It
If you find out you have the early stages of gum disease that include gingivitis and early periodontal disease, you can probably stop the spread of the disease before it causes problems with the appearance of your teeth and gums. Most people who catch it early will not need gum reshaping.

The people who let their gum disease progress to the point where their teeth and gums are separating are the best candidates for gum reshaping. It will not only help their appearance, it will also help treat the problems associated with gum disease.
