Post-Operative Instructions

•  Do not drink hot liquids for the first 24 hours (heat can stimulate bleeding). Avoid hard and crunchy food for the first 2 weeks. If possible, avoid chewing on the side where your surgery was performed. A soft diet is recommended such as oatmeal, pasta, chicken, fish, yogurt, soup, Ensure etc. Remember adequate nutrition is essential for feeling better as well as for healing.
•  It is a common occurrence for saliva to be tinged with blood for the first 3–4 days, rinse gently with cold water to minimize this.
•  If you had a soft tissue graft and bleeding continues from the roof of your mouth, dampen a regular tea bag and place over the area. Apply firm pressure for 10 minutes.
•  To minimize swelling, place an ice pack on your face over the involved area. Do this for the first 24 hours (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off). Inflammation and/or swelling may get worse after 3–4 days. This is a normal part of the healing process. After 7–10 days the inflammation and discomfort should begin to subside.
•  It is not unusual to have discomfort for at least the first week following your surgical procedure. You will be given prescriptions for medication to help tolerate the post-surgical recovery period. Take all medication according to the directions.
•  Smoking may increase post-operative discomfort and may delay healing.
•  DO NOT USE waterpik, manual or electronic toothbrush in surgical areas.
•  Brush and floss NON SURGICAL areas as you normally would.
•  Keep your tongue out of the surgical area. Tongue exploration may damage the surgical site.
•  No vigorous exercise for the first 48–72 hours.
•  For implants placed in the upper jaw, avoid forcefully blowing your nose.
