How Receding Gums Can Cause You to Lose Your Teeth?

Posted on 9/10/2019 by Janie Scholes
How Receding Gums Can Cause You to Lose Your Teeth?Receding gums or gum disease is something we take very seriously in our office. One of the preventative measures we take on our side is educating our patients about periodontal disease and the long-term effects of receding gums.

Very Real Problems
When you come in for your checkups, one of the things that we regularly check for is receding gums. We do this by measuring the space between the crown of your tooth and the root below the gum line. But why is healthy gum tissue such a big deal? Well, the gum tissue is what holds your teeth in your mouth and keeps them attached to the jaw bone.

When gums recede, they create little empty pockets of space below the gum line. These pockets are perfect little breeding grounds for bacteria, plaque and tartar. Over time, if left untreated, this can lead to decay, loosening of the teeth and eventually tooth loss.

If you know that you are at risk for receding gums or periodontal disease, you should keep all of your regularly scheduled cleanings so that we can monitor your gums closely and ensure that they are healthy. Various things can increase your risk of developing receding gums, like smoking, tobacco use and even genetics.

Brushing twice daily and flossing are important in helping to reduce your risk of developing periodontal disease and eliminating bad habits such as smoking or tobacco use can also greatly reduce your risks. If you notice that your gums are tender or bleeding when you brush your teeth, please call our office right away and schedule a checkup. Early detection is key when treating gum disease and receding gum lines.

Please do not hesitate to call us any time with any questions or concerns you may have about your oral health.
